Ranking Calculation Scheme

State rankings are calculated on the basis of points earned at each State-level competition. Points are awarded for each position, as per below. Equal placings are awarded the same number of points as sole placings (i.e. =3rd is worth the same as 3rd; =7th is worth the same as 7th and so on).

Position    1st    2nd    3rd    4th    5th    6th    7th    8th    9th   10th   11th   12th   13th   14th   15th   16th >=17th
Points 24 21 19 18 17 15 14 12 11 9 8 6 5 4 4 2 1

In addition to these basic points, there are certain bonuses attached to some competitions. For State Championship events, an additional 2 points are scored for each placing. (Yes, that's right - you get a minimum of three whole points just for turning up to State Championships.) An Under-15 fencer who turns up to State Open Championships is guaranteed 9 (count 'em, nine) Under-15 ranking points. This is designed to encourage younger fencers to turn up and compete against the older, more experienced fencers, in order to help them develop valuable competition skills.

For under-age rankings, additional bonuses apply. For an Under-20 fencer, State Under-20 Circuit competitions attract a zero bonus, State Under-20 Championship competitions attract a +2 bonus, State Open Circuit competitions attract a +2 bonus and State Open Championships attract a +4 bonus. The full bonus point system is detailed in the table below.

Fencers cannot gain an unfair advantage by competing in competitions which others in their ranking category are ineligible to enter. For example, an Under-20 fencer may gain Under-20 ranking points by fencing in Under-20 competitions, but will not gain Open ranking points for doing so.

When a fencer does compete above their age category, while they will obtain a ranking in that category they will not be given any additional bonus points in that category. So again, an Under-20 fencer who wins a State Open Circuit will gain 26 points for their Under-20 ranking, but they will only gain 24 points for their Open ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rankings

Why doesn't my name appear in the rankings list?
Have you competed in a competition that will gain you ranking points for that particular division?

Are you still eligible for that division? (eg. if you turned 20 before 1st of January of this year, you will not be eligible for an Under-20 ranking even if you have competed in an Under-20 competition in the last 12 months.)

If the answer to these two questions is "Yes," then it is possible that your name has not yet made it into the membership database. Since the results table contains results from national and international competitions as well as state ones, not every fencer whose name appears in the lists gets entered into the ranking tables. Contact info@qafa.org.au and ask whether your membership renewal has been processed yet.

If your membership has been processed, perhaps your date of birth and/or gender are not stored correctly in the database, thus rendering you ineligible to be considered for a particular ranking division. If that appears to be the case, again, please contact info@qafa.org.au and let us know that there might be a problem.
What happens when there was a mixed competition?
Fencers who fenced in the mixed competition gain the same number of points for their position as if it had been a single-sex competition.

For example, if a female sabreur (sabreuse) were to place second in a mixed sabre competition, she would still only gain 21 ranking points (plus any modifiers) towards her ranking in Women's Sabre.
How many competitions are counted in the ranking calculations?
Generally, 12 months' worth of competitions are included in the rankings, with each competition from the current year superceding the equivalent competition for the previous year.

For example, there are three open circuit competitions each year, plus one state open championship event. At any one time, the three most recent State Circuit competitions and the single most recent State Championship event are included.
Why does a competition appear twice in a single ranking category?
For some categories, the same main competition can have two events that count for the one ranking division. For example, the State Cadet Championships can have both an Under 15 and Under 17 Foil event, which means that that "State Cadet Championships" will appear twice in the Under 15 ranking calculations.
Why doesn't my question appear here?
